Cybersecure companies protect their digital assets from all types of threats, whether they are internal or external, in addition to their protection from any natural disaster. These companies use certain methods, processes, and technologies by following cybersecurity practices to protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of their network and data against all odds of cyber-attacks and data breach. Cybersecurity practices are the application of such methodologies and procedures that secure computers, servers, mobile devices, electronic systems, networks, and data from any cyber-attack or security breach.

Basically, there are six major types of cybersecurity practices identified by   Voltek team and those are:

  1. Network security: Used to secure computer network
  2. Application security: Used to secure applications
  3. Information security: Used to secure information
  4. Operational security: Used to limit access to the data
  5. End-user education: It is the process of training direct users about preventive measures to protect their devices and network from any cyberattack
  6. Disaster recovery and business continuity action plan: It is implemented after the cyberattack or any other natural disaster

Now here’s the question:

What makes any company cybersecure?

The proper implementation and application of all six types of cybersecurity practices makes any company cybersecure. To follow these practices there is a need to understand a difference between security and compliance. Security is the set of measures that are taken by the company to secure its digital assets, whereas compliance is the proper implementation of already established company specific cybersecurity guidelines or practices. Thence, any company is needed to be both secure and compliant when it comes to protection against malicious attacks. Additionally,  to make any company secure the staff is also needed to be educated about the usage of their devices and protection of data within them, and if incase their security is breached, they have proper disaster and business continuity action plan to continue their daily business operations without interruption.

As we are now aware of cybersecure companies and cybersecurity practices, the question now is why do companies need to be cybersecure?

Why do companies need to be cybersecure?

All businesses and companies are needed to be cybersecure to protect their digital assets and image. Yes, image! Why we are saying image because when the data of any company is breached, the headlines are generated in the print, social and electronic media depending on the size of data and its impact. This is not it, the company whose data is breached is fined by the regulatory authorities like HIPPA, FINRA etc. under the obligation of data compliance laws. Some of the most common data compliance laws are General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Federal Information Security Management Act of 2002 (FISMA), Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 (SOX) and Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS).

Hence, it now becomes a need of every company, every business to be cybersecure to protect its data against all malicious attack. Otherwise, they can face heavy fines like the way a great company like Equifax has paid $700 million fine in a settlement with Federal Trade Commission due to loss of 147 million customers. Even the tech tycoons like LinkedIn and Facebook have faced legal actions against their data breach. LinkedIn has paid $1.25 million for its 2021 data breach, whereas Facebook has paid $4.9 billion for its 2019 data breach in the legal settlement.

Now you might be thinking…

How cybersecure company is more reliable than its competitors?

The answer is simple, the cybersecure company will not let its data be violated by any malicious attack, which naturally secures sensitive information. As these companies follow proper cybersecurity practices and framework like NIST, so there are extremely low chances of data breach and in case of SMEs almost zero percent. Whereas the company that is not cybersecure may face security breach and even data breach. In the aftermath of which data and information associated with the clients may become public. So, to avoid such incident, people trust more on cybersecure companies. As such incidents not only destroys the image of business, but the business itself and its daily operations. Hence, by keeping these all factors in mind, it will not be wrong to say that any cybersecure company is more reliable than its competitors as it is always ready to face any situation in today’s global village world.
